The Andrus Children's Center reaches approximately 2500 children and families each year through our many programs. The evolution of our programs and services is evidence of our commitment to excellence in providing "Opportunity to Youth."

1928 - John E. Andrus establishes the Julia Dyckman Andrus Memorial, in memory of his late wife. The 110 acre campus, then known as the Andrus Children's Home, provided long term residential care for dependent children. We now have the capacity to provide residential treatment services to 73 children with serious emotional difficulties.

1976 - The Orchard School is authorized by the New York State Department of Education to provide educational services to the children living in the residential program. The Orchard School goes on to win the U.S. Department of Education's Blue Ribbon award three times over (1990, 1994 and 2001).

1990 - Andrus opens a Day Treatment Program which now serves 80 children from metropolitan area communities.

1991 - Andrus dedicates a new Diagnostic Center to provide evaluations and short term treatment for young children within the foster care system who present significant mental health needs.

1995 - Andrus establishes a Community Services division with Westchester Family Friends, an intensive home visiting and family support program for at risk families with newborn babies. Since then, the community programs have grown to include other family strengthening and abuse prevention programs including Healthy Families New York, Early Head Start Family Support and the Strengthening Families Program.

1998 - Andrus develops the Yonkers Early Childhood Initiative (ECI), a work group of the City of Yonkers' Healthy Yonkers Initiative. The ECI grows into a working collaborative of over 60 public and private partners dedicated to fostering the well being of children from birth to age five. Many of the ECI's programs go on to receive national acclaim.

2000 - Andrus begins merger discussions with the Center for Preventive Psychiatry, a Westchester-based child and family mental health agency.

2001 - Andrus begins full implementation of the Sanctuary Model, a trauma sensitive treatment, in response to the growing body of knowledge on childhood trauma. The Sanctuary Model evolves into a nationally recognized model with Andrus playing a pivotal role in the dissemination of the model to the field.

2003 - Andrus begins merger discussions with Family and Community Services of Eastchester, a child and family-focused organization serving Bronxville, Eastchester and Tuckahoe. This merger will increase the scope of Andrus' services to include an early childhood day care program (ECDC) and after school programs (EASY) as well as adding mental health services in Eastchester.

2005 - Andrus completes the corporate merger with the Center for Preventive Psychiatry. The merger adds out- patient mental health services to the Andrus family of programs, and expands the geographic scope of services with mental health clinics in Yonkers, White Plains and Peekskill.

2005 - Andrus establishes the Andrus Center for Learning and Innovation to provide professional leadership on issues, practices and policies affecting vulnerable children and families.
