PARENTS & CHILDREN TOGETHER (PACT)
THERAPEUTIC PROGRAM
Predicated upon the belief that children of
mentally ill parents comprise a population at particularly high risk for
emotional and developmental problems, the mission of the Parents and Children
Together (PACT) program is to enhance the mental health and general functioning
of Severely and Persistently Mentally Ill (SPMI) parents and their pre-school-aged
child in order to strengthen the parent-child dyad and stabilize the family
system. This mission is based on the belief that the enhancement of a
mother's ability to attune and respond appropriately to her child, results
in the child's consolidation of an emotionally secure attachment. In turn,
a strong parent-child attachment provides the basis for healthy social,
psychological, and cognitive development during infancy, the pre-school
years, and beyond.
Since its inception in 1987, PACT program staff have created
and implemented a uniquely innovative multi-modal intervention to provide
primary and secondary mental health services to (a) enhance the motivation,
confidence and competence of SPMI adults in the parenting role; and, (b)
strengthen the emotional attachment and relationship between parent and
child through intensive mental health intervention, family support services,
community outreach and advocacy, and clinical research.
