In 1928, Yonkers-born philanthropist John E. Andrus created an orphanage on a beautiful property overlooking the Hudson River, in memory of his wife, Julia – an adopted child of the Dyckman family. More than 80 years later, the Julia Dyckman Andrus Memorial, also known as the Andrus Children's Center, has evolved into a premiere, nationally recognized treatment, education and research facility - but it remains, at heart, a family-centered organization.

All Andrus programs respect the strengths and acknowledge the struggles that are a part of life for every family.

A single theme runs through all our diverse efforts: to reinforce the health and resilience of children and families by expanding the skills and resources on which they can draw.

Our campus-based programs provide families with respite and guidance while seeking their input and participation wherever possible. Our community-based initiatives enhance families' capacities and child-raising strategies within the context of their own cultures, neighborhoods and homes. Our mental health programs provide families with the necessary support to promote mental health, prevent emotional distress and treat mental illness in children.

Originally founded as an orphanage for needy youngsters, Andrus now provides a broad network of supports to vulnerable children and families of all backgrounds and means. Andrus serves more than 140 seriously emotionally disturbed children, grades K-9, in three treatment programs and a Blue Ribbon school on its lovely, 110-acre campus. In community-based initiatives across Yonkers and Mt. Vernon, we partner with local agencies, government organizations and families to address the needs of hundreds of children, from birth through grade school. Our mental health programs help to provide counseling to young children with mental health needs in three locations throughout Westchester County.

Andrus is committed to create a community that supports families' efforts and provides children with a sense of stability, security, self-worth and hope. Forged in the last century, our vision has transcended the boundaries of time and place, and continues to guide all our work.
